Jan has been making prints for over 40 years, developing printmaking techniques by experimentation and innovation. Her prints are hand pulled, signed and numbered.
Jan Heath grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and attended the University of Kentucky, University of Md., and Montgomery College,Takoma Park,Md.
In 1979, drawn by the natural beauty and friendly quality of the Berkeley Springs area, Jan left the Washington, DC area with her husband, painter Jonathan Heath, and their son, Damian, to build their home and studios. Working and living in rural Morgan County provides a continuing source of inspiration for Jan's prints. In 1992, Jan and Jonathan opened the Heath Studio Gallery in Berkeley Springs.
In 1999, their grown son, Damian returned to Berkeley Springs with his wife, Betsy, to open the restaurant, Lot 12 Public House, to rave reviews. Damian is a James Beard Award semifinalist and the restaurant is rated the no. 1 restaurant in West Virginia by Business Insider Magazine. The restaurant, open for dinner only, is located at 117 Warren St. in Berkeley Springs.304-258-6264

This is a step-by-step explanation of her mono/lino printmaking technique:
Artist Statement:
Rural surroundings influence my interpretation of the natural and spiritual world. Using design elements, patterns and textures, simplified forms develop to express my view of the world.
Usually starting with a vague idea, the image evolves on the plate, block or paper as I work. Developing new techniques and combining different forms of printmaking keeps the process fresh and engaging.
